Dark Fiber – Also called “unlit” or “black” fiber.  A dark fiber optic cable is literally dark, meaning there are no light pulses being transmitted. Businesses can take advantage of them by leasing the fibers and “lighting” them. However, this undertaking should not be taken lightly. You must have in place a high level of technical expertise to not only benefit from the flexibility network architecture, speed, and security,  but also the maintenance and troubleshooting that will go along with it.

Reasons to Consider Dark Fiber:

  • Your bandwidth needs are high and continue to grow.

  • Your networks and team need to be securely connected at all times to operate successfully.

  • You have increased security needs.

  • You want to set and have fine-tuned control of the speed and latency of your network, which is not always available from an ISP.

Dedicated Fiber – With Dedicated Fiber, your business will experience the best bandwidth that is symmetric (both up/down speeds are the same) and with upload speeds up to 20x faster leading to lightning-fast internet access that is all yours. No sharing! Dedicated fiber connections typically come with Service Level Agreements (SLAs) from the ISP that guarantees the uptime of your network to be >99.9% or you’re entitled to reimbursement.

Reasons to Consider Dedicated Fiber:

  • Intensive work environments requiring large amounts of data sharing.
  • Companies that utilize Video, VoIP, or UCaaS and struggle with latency.
  • Cannot afford to have network downtime.

Today’s modern businesses require a fast, reliable internet connection. With the ever-increasing number of applications, tools, and services being accessed online via the cloud, your business is no doubt more dependent than ever on fast internet connections. Today’s broadband providers offer static IP addresses which is crucial for running a website, hosting VPN connections, and setting up remote desktop access. For best results, broadband is typically best suited for the small businesses that do not have a lot of employees causing congestion on a circuit and for your distributed workforce.

A common method on the market to access the internet, which involves connecting over coax cables.  This method can provide your business with reliable web access at competitive speeds.

With a satellite connection, you can set up shop with fast business internet just about anywhere! Connect to all your critical business applications, such as voice over IP (VoIP), payment processing, cloud computing, and email, and keep your operations running smoothly whether you’re in a rural or metropolis region! Enjoy broadband speeds up to 100 Mbps in select areas. Satellite business internet plans typically come with all the features you may need such as:

  • Persistent IP addresses

  • No hard data caps

  • Business-class support

3G, 4G, and 5G represent the 3rd, 4th, and 5th generations of cellular technology. The difference between each primarily comes down to their capabilities. With each generation we have seen improvements in speed (lower latency), network volume (higher bandwidth), and accessibility (longer range of service).

3G is being phased out and will no longer be available by the end of 2022. If you need assistance to move to 4 or 5G, please reach out so you are not left unsupported and disconnected!

4G LTE provides extended coverage globally, including rural areas and developing countries, enhanced resiliency by augmenting legacy internet connections, remote site management for out-of-band management thus providing secure, proactive monitoring of mission-critical endpoints, and increased productivity making work easier from home and when traveling with mobile devices.

5G networks are getting a lot of buzz and excitement surrounding it. 5G will offer faster connections, lower latency and automation possibilities. However, the rollout is still not  widespread for now.

Fixed Wireless – An internet option for rural areas that will connect one location, such as a farm, house, or building, to the internet via radio waves from a broadcast tower. You will not need a phone or cable line, but you will need an antenna and an electrical power source from utility mains.

Wireless – Anyone who has ever had the misfortune of down internet lines, understands the importance of a backup system. With speeds in excess of 100 Mbps, wireless is now a viable alternative as a network backup solution or for businesses that have small branch offices, retail locations, temporary worksites, etc.

WISP – Wireless Internet Service Providers provide fixed wireless communication networks and devices, typically to the top of buildings or other tall structures. A fiber connection is run to a building and then connected to an access point on the rooftop or other high viewpoint location. These wireless devices are then used to transmit point-to-point signals to other devices in their line of sight. WISPs can be installed very quickly and economically when immediate solutions are needed. However, they are more susceptible to latency and the effects of poor weather. WISPs are recommended typically as a backup link or as a connectivity solution in rural and remote areas.

Microwave – A wireless communication technology that requires line-of-sight and radio waves to provide high speed wireless connections. This allows a business the ability to send and receive data, voice, and video. Microwave is often used as a wireless alternative to fiber optic or coaxial cable for connecting remote locations or areas where it is difficult or impractical to lay physical cables.

Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) – Created in the late 1990s as an efficient alternative to the traditional Internet Protocol (IP) routing. It was designed to speed up and shape traffic flows across an enterprise’s WAN and it service provider’s network.

MPLS is slowing seeing a phase out as SD-WAN becomes more popular. However, it still remains important and a business staple due to various benefits such as QoS for real-time applications that can’t tolerate latency, jitter, packet loss and downtime, security, scalability, flexibility, traffic separation , etc.

Global demand for internet continues to increase dramatically. This may lead to a variety of different types of connections being needed and/or utilized by your expanding business or remote employees. Picking the right mix of internet transport to the right place in a cost-effective way requires effective strategies. On one side, chasing low-cost circuits can leave you with several different suppliers with varying quality, service, and performance. On the other side of the coin, enterprises can find themselves in expensive, one-stop provisioning with their existing carrier. How do you strike the right balance?
